February 18, 2010 – Mystery Topic: (Digital)

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

“The challenge for this “Mystery” topic is to capture an image which shows or clearly suggests what Minnesota life outside is or can be like during one of our winters — either desirable or undesirable!  Consider this a photojournalism assignment, perhaps to illustrate a newspaper or magazine article.  It can be serious or humorous but a person or persons must be somewhere in the image and the image must illustrate or imply something about our lives: activities that we do or challenges we face during the warm absence of summer.”

2010 Interclub Club Competition

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

Congrats to all Crosstown Camera Club members who received recognition at the Spring Break Interclub Competition!

Bill Cooper, Cynthia Fleury, Ethan Cooper, Geoff Kuchera, Holly Kuchera, John Olson, Lars Micheals and Mark Karney all walked away with awards*

And a bigger congrats to the club for receiving 2nd place in the Club Competition — 234 points!

*(If there’s anyone we missed, please accept our apologies – it was a LONG day!)

———————————————————————————————————–
In 2010 a new contest was created by the Camera Council to replace the old way of awarding points to clubs based on points garned by their members. This was the Interclub Club Competition:

“For the club entry, a club can submit up to twenty images. The club score (and ranking) will be determined by the total score of those twenty images. A maximum total score for a club would be 300 points.

The club must collect the images from their members and submit them as a single package. For clubs with more than 25 members (as determined by their report and fee to TCACCC), only one image by any one member may be used in the club entry. For clubs with less than 25 members (as determined by their report and fee to TCACCC), up to two images by any one member may be used in the club entry (it is suggested that as many members as possible be represented in the club entry).

How the club selects the twenty images is to be determined by each club. Images can be the same images as submitted by the member for the individual portion of the Interclub competition. However, a member who belongs to more than one TCACCC club cannot submit the same image for more than one club entry.”

The 20 images that were chosen for Crosstown’s entry:

6 images the were only cut because of the 20 images rule:

Thanks to everyone for participating in the first club competition. We received images from 26 members and selected the final 20 from the images attached. I’ll let the club know how we did next month when we find out the results. — Mark Karney

2010 TCACCC Interclub Competition

Monday, January 25th, 2010

The Interclub Competition is only open to the TCACCC clubs and their members.

Individual Entries to Interclub:

For the individual entries the procedure and rules are mostly the same as last year except that there will be no slide categories.  Slides may be scanned to submit as digital images.  Each member may enter up to four images in each category (Color Print, Monochrome Print, Digital Creative, Digital Nature and Digital Realistic). Please read the rules below for your entries!

Closing date is February 14, 2010.

Rules and entry forms – Individual Competition:

Crosstown Camera Club members also may drop off their entries at the Edina Art Center in the same location prints are placed for club competitions, but in the folder marked “Interclub Competition”. If you are using the EAC as your drop-off location, please drop your entries off before noon on Saturday February 13th as the EAC closes early on Saturdays and is not open on Sundays.

Club Meeting

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

Meeting date:  February 18, 2010 – 6:00 PM

Meeting Location: Studio of Alec Johnson – 7117 Ohms Lane, Edina, MN

Program: Presentation by Alec Johnson on basic studio lighting techniques. The meeting will be on the same day as our regular meeting, but is scheduled to be held at Alec’ s studio not far from our current meeting site. It also will start a half hour earlier, or at 6:00 pm instead of 6:30.

If you get lost you can call Alec’s cell (651-278-4582) or Mark Karney’s (612-501-8555) for directions. Because models will be in use, feel free to come at the usual time (6:30) if you can’t make the earlier time as we will try to rotate shooters of the models over the course of the shoot. Makeup/Hair starts at 5:00 and if you’d like to see that action, come at that time.

This is a basic lighting presentation, but Alec will have models at 3 stations to shoot in rotation so bring your cameras if you desire.  Bringing Pocket Wizards or other remote flash/camera triggers and off camera flashes would be helpful, but not necessary. You do not have to bring a camera to attend. This should be an informative session, so please come even if you prefer not to shoot. We will have some food and snacks there as well due to the earlier start.

Digital Salon: “Mystery Topic” — The challenge for this “Mystery” topic is to capture an image which shows or clearly suggests what Minnesota life outside is or can be like during one of our winters — either desirable or undesirable!  Consider this a photojournalism assignment, perhaps to illustrate a newspaper or magazine article.  It can be serious or humorous but a person or persons must be somewhere in the image and the image must illustrate or imply something about our lives: activities that we do or challenges we face during the warm absence of summer.

As the presentation will likely take the whole meeting time, we will still have a digital salon but will likely have to arrange for online judging. Submit your images per the digital salon rules and check the website after Feb 18th for the results.
